And <strong>its past<\/strong> makes it a point of particular interest for history buffs, while its current function will delight shopping enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>Let me tell you more!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A brief history of Fondaco dei Tedeschi<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As early as the 13th century, <strong>merchants from Germany<\/strong> (but also from other northern European countries, included in the name <em>Germans)<\/em> were numerous in Venice, seeking spices and dyes for wool. To accommodate them, this building was chosen, and soon named <strong>Fondaco<\/strong>a term derived from the Arabic word <em>Funduq<\/em> used to designate a shop\/inn.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs, <strong>over 200 rooms<\/strong> The first floor was used for storage and warehousing.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, the <em>German <\/em>was one of the largest in the Serenissima, and so it was only natural that this building, located just a stone's throw from the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/rialto-bridge\/\">Rialto Bridge<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/grand-canal-venice\/\">Grand Canal<\/a>was attributed to him.<\/p>\n<p>In 1505, <strong>a huge fire<\/strong> ravaged the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, which was reduced to ashes. The palace was rebuilt in 1508, larger and more imposing, to showcase both its trade with the German community and its artistic and cultural aspects.
