It is located in <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/map-of-venice\/\">the Dorsoduro district<\/a> in Venice, and you'll see why it's well worth a visit!<\/p>\n<p>But first, let's find out who this strange character is...!<\/p>\n<h3>Saint Pantalon, a popular saint<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Pantaleon of Nicomedia<\/strong>more commonly known as <strong>San Pant<\/strong>was a 3rd\/4th-century physician at the court of Emperor Maximilian.<\/p>\n<p>He converted to Christianity and began caring for the sick. <em>in the name of Christ<\/em>This led to several assassination attempts, from which he escaped. However, he refused to renounce his beliefs, and was tortured from <strong>several different ways<\/strong>\u00a0: burned alive except that the flames are extinguished, sunk in lead but the lead cooled, drowned, eaten alive or quartered, with each time <strong>a kind of miracle<\/strong> who intervened to spare him. Finally, he was beheaded in 304\/305.<\/p>\n<p>Considered a martyr, <strong>Saint Pantaleone<\/strong> will be canonized in Rome, and is celebrated every July 27. The most fervent devotees even celebrate him every 27th of every month!<\/p>\n<p>On the one hand, Saint Pantaleone is <strong>the patron saint of doctors<\/strong>but is also a recurring character in <strong>the <em>commedia dell'arte<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0! His face can be seen at the celebrations of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/carnival-venice\/\">Venice Carnival<\/a>in mask form!<\/p>\n<p>The reason is simple: this saint being <strong>very popular in Venice<\/strong>Perhaps envious of the city's success and brilliance throughout Europe, its neighbors nicknamed the Venetians <em>Pantalone<\/em>. As a result, this character represents <strong>the venetian bourgeois<\/strong>stingy, credulous, libertine and very meticulous.<\/p>\n<p>And for the more perceptive who wonder if there's a connection with the word <em>Pants <\/em>in French, the answer is <strong>Yes<\/strong>\u00a0! This word was taken up by the people of France, in connection with the atypical outfit worn by the commedia dell'arte character!<br \/>\n<a name=\"2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Presentation of the church of Saint Pantaleone<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are several churches dedicated to Saint Pantaleone in France, Switzerland and elsewhere, but the one we're interested in here is in Venice.<\/p>\n<p>It's hard to say exactly when this church was built, but the building you can see today dates from <strong>1668 &#8211; 1686<\/strong>. It is said to have been built in place of a previous church by Francesco Comin of Treviso.<\/p>\n<p>Its fa\u00e7ade should have been covered <strong>marble, but<\/strong>\u00a0the construction remains unfinished, you will only see <strong>red bricks<\/strong>This is one of its key features. You can follow the martyrdom of the Saint Pantaleone in striking detail on this set of 40 canvases!<\/p>\n<p>For this painting alone, I invite you to enter this church!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The painting \"The Conversion of San Pantalon\" by Paolo Veronese<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You can also admire a painting by <strong>Veronese<\/strong>entitled the\u00a0<em>Conversion of Saint Pantaleon (1587).<\/em> He can be seen healing a child on a painting on the wall at the back of the main chapel.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Other works by major artists<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Between the various chapels, the main altar and the walls surrounding the nave, you'll come across paintings and sculptures by renowned artists.<\/p>\n<p>You can also admire other creations by <strong>Fumiani<\/strong>marble statues of <strong>Bonazza<\/strong>a canvas of <strong>Gregorio Lazzarini<\/strong>, <em>the Coronation of the Virgin <\/em>from<strong><em> Vivarini<\/em><\/strong>frescoes by Pietro Longhi and several works by <strong>Paolo Veneziano<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Pavements with impressive effects<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If the ceiling leaves you breathless, remember to look at the floor too. In places, the paving and <strong>its 3D effect<\/strong> leaves you breathless, when it's not the mosaics that impress.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The church bell tower<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If it's not comparable, in terms of dimensions, <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/campanile-venice\/\">at Campanile<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/place-saint-marc\/\">Place St Marc<\/a>The bell tower of Saint Pantaleone church is no less remarkable.
