It was at this point that he adopted the structure consisting of two inclined ramps and a movable central section that can be raised to let the tallest ships through.<\/p>\n<p>It was damaged for the first time in 1310 during a rebellion in the town, before being restored to its original state. <strong>collapse in 1444<\/strong>We were unable to bear the weight of the onlookers gathered to watch the procession of the Marquis of Ferrara's wife.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 16th century, plans were drawn up for the construction of a bridge <strong>in stone<\/strong> are being analyzed. The damage continues, and fires in nearby neighborhoods are starting to cause concern, so we need to act as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<p>By 1551, many of the most famous architects were making proposals, but nothing seemed to convince the Doges. The financial difficulties of Venice at the time and the <strong>the Black Death crisis<\/strong> will put the brakes on the idea.<\/p>\n<p>Work finally began in 1588, under the aegis of the architect <strong>Antonio da Ponte<\/strong> who presented a project combining beauty, practicality and solidity. And it's no accident that this bridge is so famous, as it's a real architectural feat for its time!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Technical specifications<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It's a <strong>single-arch bridge<\/strong> (selected against three-arch projects), which measures 48 meters long and 22 meters wide. Its arch is built 7.50 meters above the water, with an opening that allows ships to pass underneath easily. And it is supported by <strong>nearly 12,000 stilts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Although the design is relatively uncluttered, the sides of the building feature a number of city emblems, including <strong>the lion of St Mark<\/strong> (which also takes pride of place in the center of <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/place-saint-marc\/\">St. Mark's Square<\/a>) or the coat of arms of a former doge of the city (Pasquale Cicogna) who worked to renovate the Rialto Bridge and beautify Venice as a whole!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Rialto facts and anecdotes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Early 12th century, <strong>a bridge over water<\/strong>made up of interconnected boats, was used to cross the canal.<\/li>\n<li>The Rialto Bridge was <strong>the only way<\/strong> from the left bank to the right bank (and vice versa)<\/li>\n<li>It takes its name from the <strong>nearby Rialto district<\/strong>a major trading center and home to the bankers of the day<\/li>\n<li>Today, numerous souvenir stores (soccer shirts, gondolas, Venetian trinkets, lace, etc.) occupy the side aisles of the bridge.
