By the 14th century, Venice was the richest and most important <strong>the most powerful in Europe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Rapid growth<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the 15th and 16th centuries, Venice was a major center of Renaissance art and architecture, and home to some of the era's greatest artists and architects.<\/p>\n<p>Venice was a major naval power throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The palace was originally used to house the Doge, <strong>the head of the Venetian Republic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Enlarged and rebuilt over the centuries, the current structure only appeared at the end of the 15th century.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout its history, the Doge's Palace has served as the political and administrative center of the Republic of Venice, and as the residence of the Doge.<\/p>\n<p>In the 19th century, the palace was used as a prison, and in 1923 it was opened to the public. <strong>as a museum presenting the history and art of the Venetian Republic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc164811103\"><\/a><strong>Crossing the Rialto bridge<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The famous <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/rialto-bridge\/\">Rialto bridge<\/a> is one of the most popular landmarks in downtown Venice. It offers superb views of the city's canals and buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The bridge was built in 1181 by Nicol\u00f2 Barattieri.
