I'll explain why this is a common mistake, and the reasons for mixing up the two. <strong>river and canal<\/strong> in Venice!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What's the name of Venice's river?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Generally speaking, what people refer to as the Venice River is <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/grand-canal-venice\/\">the Grand Canal<\/a> which crosses the city from one end to the other!<\/p>\n<p>This vast expanse of water winds its way through <strong>3.8 kilometers<\/strong> from east to west, with a width of between 50 and 70 meters. It divides the city into two banks - the right bank and the left bank - which you're sure to discover during your visit to the city. <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/venice-tourism\/\">stay in Venice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It's one of the city's must-sees, <strong>its central element<\/strong> and the fact that it's so vast explains why it's often associated with a river. In reality, it's a canal, within which more than <strong>45 small canals<\/strong> come and throw themselves in!<\/p>\n<p>However, Venice's Grand Canal does have its source in a river, and not just any river. <strong>Italy's longest river!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>From the Po to the Venetian lagoon<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This river is the <strong>Po<\/strong>652 km along what is known as the Po Plain. This plain includes the regions of Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia Romagna and Veneto, and is often referred to as the \"Po Valley\". <strong>Padana Plain<\/strong> to designate it.<\/p>\n<p>It passes through the following cities in particular: Turin, Asti, Milan, Como, Bergamo, Mantua, <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/padua\/\">Padua<\/a>Venice, Chioggia, Bologna, Modena, Ferrara and Rimini.<\/p>\n<p>The Po flows from the western Alps and ends in the <strong>the Adriatic Sea<\/strong> forming a 380 km delta<sup>2<\/sup>. It was here that Venice was founded, when merchants decided to establish their quarters in the 5th century.<\/p>\n<p>The Po becomes a <strong>strategic commercial crossroads<\/strong> and the element that will enable Venice to become one of the most influential players in the boot. To navigate Venice's river - or rather its Grand Canal - I suggest you opt for the following means of transport:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/venice-gondola\/\">gondolas in Venice<\/a>who remain the way <strong>the most romantic<\/strong> and most peaceful way to discover this emblematic feature of the city<\/li>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/vaporetto-venice\/\">vaporetto<\/a>the essential boat-bus for getting around Venice, which will take you to every <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/venice-places-of-interest\/\">places of interest<\/a> of the city!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And if you decide to explore <strong>the Venice lagoon<\/strong>you can :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the Vaporetto Pass to travel between Venice's historic center and the neighboring islands. The Po is the river <strong>the most important<\/strong> of the area. But it's far from the only one to have played a part in the formation of the Veneto region.<\/p>\n<p>Among the major rivers still flowing in the region are :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Adige<\/strong>the 2nd<sup>e<\/sup> Italy's longest river, 410 km long. It passes through beautiful Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet!<\/li>\n<li>Visit <strong>Piave<\/strong>which opens out to the north-east of Venice, which is the 5<sup>e<\/sup> Italy's largest river<\/li>\n<li>Visit <strong>Brenta<\/strong>which crosses the province of Vicenza and ends its course close to <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/chioggia\/\">Chioggia<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Visit <strong>Bacchiglione<\/strong>which also contributes to the formation of the Venetian lagoon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"4\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What to see and do around Venice's river?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Grand Canal, or Venice River, is a central feature of the Serenissima, surrounded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/monuments-venice\/\">the city's most beautiful monuments<\/a>. There are <strong>over 170 palaces, churches and other wonders<\/strong> along its shores!<\/p>\n<p>While you'll see plenty of them along its shores just by opening your eyes wide, there are a few things to focus on. Here are my suggestions!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/bonjourvenise.fr\/en\/rialto-bridge\/\">Rialto Bridge<\/a>one of the world's most famous bridges, which you can cross on foot or by sailing underneath.
