Miss Duse was 38 years old, very famous and applauded by audiences the world over. For their first night of passion, on September 25, they chose <strong>the Serenissima's most luxurious hotel, the Danieli<\/strong>. The Hotel Danieli in Venice is not just any old place. It's made up of three palaces: the 20th-century Palazzo Danieli Excelsior, the 19th-century Palazzo Casa Nuova, former treasury headquarters, and the Venetian Gothic Palazzo Dandolo, which housed the original hotel. It has been described as <strong>the noblest establishment in the Serenissima<\/strong> because of its original Gothic architecture and its privileged position on the lagoon.<\/p>\n<p>It soon became the preferred residence of kings, princes, cardinals and ambassadors. The building was enriched by a succession of owners. The most recent owners equipped the building with numerous <strong>gilding worthy of Venice's finest palaces.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"_Toc138520418\"><\/a><strong>The early days of the Hotel Danieli in Venice<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 1822, Giuseppe Dal Niel transformed the building into a hotel, calling it Albergo Reale. It was later nicknamed the \"Danieli\". They first met at the hotel, at a ball organized by Wally Toscanini.<\/p>\n<p>Onassis wanted to meet the soprano, of whom he was a great fan, so he asked Mrs. Elsa Maxwell, a famous American journalist, to invite Callas and her husband.
