Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari was the first of two churches built by the Franciscan friars in Venice.
Very simple, austere, but one of the most charming churches in Venice, this should be added to your list of things to see during your stay in Venice, Italy.
The 13th-century church is located in the San Polo district of Venice, facing the Campo dei Frari.

A brief history of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari
I've mentioned that the church dates back to the 13th century. that's not quite true. The original church built by the Franciscan friars in the 13th century was in fact rebuilt in the 14th century, and is the church we see today. Over the centuries, the edifice developed into the place we know today, offering a skilful blend of the traditional and the modern. Franciscan architecture and culture to tourists from all over the world.
A simple, sober exterior
The exterior of the church is nothing special, and is in fact rather austere, which was in keeping with Franciscan principles.
You won't find any ostentation. Nevertheless, there is a certain beauty and something special in this church.
Of all the churches in Venice, this is perhaps the least photogenic. When you see it, you'll realize that it's far more beautiful than it appears in the photos.
The bell tower is also significant in that it is the second tallest in Venice, with only that of San Marco is higher.
However, it's a strangely moving place that exudes a special aura. When you come face to face with this building, you'll be imbued with a sense of grandeur. Don't be intimidated pass through the doors of this church. It's inside that you'll discover wonders!
Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari: a magnificent interior
Entering the church, the first impression is breathtaking. Twelve pillars, representing the apostles, separate the nave from the two aisles. The interior of the church is a treasure trove of great artistic treasures from the 12th to the 18th century.
Some of the most beautiful works are :
- Titian's Assumption dominates the altar. Overpowering and enormous, it's a truly impressive work.
- The Pala Pesaro, commemorating the victory of the Venetian fleet over the Turks.
- Gothic wooden stalls still found in very few Venetian churches.
- The tombs, in particular that of Antonio Canova would contain only his heart.
- Donatello's sculpture of John the Baptist dating from 1438.
Of course, these are just the major works on display in the church. There are many other pieces to discover on site. Wherever you look, there is a splendor to be contemplated in this Venice church.
What are the opening hours?
The Church of the Frari is open every day 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for visitors. Of course, it is not possible to enter the church when there is a religious service or other event.
In general, therefore, it's best not to visit Venice's churches on Sundays or public holidays. If you want to come on Sunday, come in the afternoon. You'll find far fewer tourists on site, and avoid mass times.
How much does admission to Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari cost?
The Basilica Frari is one of the few churches in Venice to charge an entrance fee. You'll need count €5 per person to visit the site.
