Fondamenta delle Zattere in Venice: the origin of the curious name
What does "zattere" mean? It means "rafts". Literally, it's like saying the "Raft Promenade". Anyway, you won't see any rafts here. So where does the name come from?
In the past, carpenters would send tree trunks down rivers on rafts. directly into the lagoon.
That's why this long promenade facing the Giudecca canal is called this. It was the arrival point for many logs coming from the mountains and the plain.
Where to find the Fondamenta delle Zattere
This beautiful promenade is located in the Dorsoduro district. It is quite long and links the San Basilio area to Punta della Dogana.
Walking along Fondamenta delle Zattere, you'll have the chance to see the skyline of Giudecca Island. From here you can also see the famous Church of the Redentore.
What to see along the Zattere promenade
The most interesting monuments are located close to Punta della Dogana.
In fact, in this area you could see the Magazzini del Sale, which is often used as a venue for local exhibitions. Near the Magazzini is the church of Santa Maria del Rosario, often referred to as the Gesuati church.
If, as you approach the San Basilio area, you turn slightly to the right, you can also see the famous Squero di San Trovasoone of the last places in Venice where gondolas and other boats are made.
If you're with children, this is the perfect place in Venice for them to discover new things. In fact, the workshops are usually open, and you can watch the making and renovation of gondolas that roam the large canal.
Why visit this place?
First of all, it's a great place to relax. In Venice, you'll be walking for hours. In fact, it's unlikely that you'll be constantly taking boats. Not only are the costs quite high, but the different boats don't go everywhere in Venice.
