Venetian rowing: a thousand-year-old tradition
Venetian rowing is an ancient tradition dating back to the days when Venice was one of the world's most important maritime powers.
Venetian rowing involves the use of a single-bladed oar, operated by a single rower positioned at the bow of the boat.
This technique, which requires great balance and physical strength, has been handed down from generation to generation. Even today, it represents an important part of the city's culture.
In 1974, when the first Vogalonga was held, the intention was to revive the beauty of rowing in the face of increasing motorization of the lagoon.
