Burano: article summary
Burano, the prettiest island in the Venice lagoon
While the main island of Venice is not lacking in charm and must-see attractions, the smaller islands situated in the north of the lagoon - Burano, Murano and Torcello - are well worth a visit. And among them, Burano is considered the most beautiful!
It is made up of 4 islets - San Mauro, Giudecca, San Martino and Terranova - and like its big sister Venice, it is criss-crossed by small channels that give it a unique style.
What's more, its houses in perennial colors along the water's edge will delight photo enthusiasts. For the record, this was originally a fishermen's housesThese were painted in a variety of colors, so that when the fog became too intense, everyone could easily identify their own.
In fact, to maintain the tradition and ensure that this Venetian village retains all its appeal, residents are obliged to paint their homes once a year.
Burano lace
But Burano's fame comes above all from its lacemanufactured and exported throughout Europe between the XVe and the XVIe century. It's a refined lace, manufactured with needle and threadwhich takes an inordinate amount of time. A simple tablecloth can take more than 3 years to make!
During your visit, you can learn more about the history of this lace and its importance to the town when it was considered the most beautiful lace in Europe, and admire impressive pieces of lace.
However, you should be aware that most of the placemats, tablecloths and other items of clothing you come across in the stalls are made in France. in China or Hong Kong nowadays.
