Very little visited by tourists, Mazzorbo is a peaceful spot north of Venice.
The place has its own charm and it would be a shame not to visit.
Today, I'm going to tell you more about this place.
Mazzorbo: article summary
Mazzorbo: at a glance
The island is about 10 kilometers from the famous old town. The island can be reached from Burano. The two islands are linked by a wooden bridge for pedestrians.
The two islands are very different. Burano, lace islandBurano is very densely populated, with 3,000 inhabitants. Burano is characterized by its houses and narrow streets. Mazzorbo, on the other hand, is rural, with a population of just 300. On the island, you'll find a park, a children's playground and the Burano/Mazzorbo cemetery.
Agricultural land
There are still a few farmers on the island, growing vegetables and wine. Some of the island's inhabitants go to work every day via the Burano bridge, while others travel to Venice by vaporetto (ferries). If you cross the wooden bridge to Mazzorbo, you'll also find several fine restaurants.
How do I get to the island?
The island is easily accessible by boat. During the day, there are ferries (water buses). every 20 minutes from Venice to Mazzorbo. Most of them go to Torcello and Burano.
The bridge between Burano and Mazzorbo
The wooden bridge is the only link between the two islands, and only for pedestrians. The islands of Mazzorbo and Burano are not large. No place on the two Venetian islands is no more than a 15-minute walk from the pier..
What are the island's places of interest?
Just over the bridge is a large garden. Here you can see vineyards and vegetable fields.
A lovely footpath winds around the island. It's about 2 kilometers long. A walk in the green, along the Mazzorbo paths, is ideal after visiting the island of Burano.
If you turn left after the Burano footbridge, you'll reach the cemetery after a few hundred meters. You can see normal graves as well as numerous urn graves in the walls.
Further south, you come to the island church: the Chiesa di Santa Caterina. Finally, if you go straight on, you'll come to a park with a children's playground after about 100 meters. After a few minutes, you'll reach the ferry terminal on the island of Mazzorbo.
Exceptional catering options
If you want to eat delicious specialties in Venice, I recommend you visit one of the two best restaurants on the island. These are quickly accessible from Burano. Here you'll find the luxurious Venissa restaurant, serving excellent local cuisine. If you're on a budget, you can head for the Trattoria alla Madallena on the pier.
Take a boat to Mazzorbo
Although it's only about 500 meters on foot between the Mazzorbo and Burano piers, most water buses stop at both piers. Many continue on to Torcello, the island with the oldest church in Venice.
Vaporettos run to and from Venice every 20 minutes or so. Many tourists get off at Burano and return to Mazzorbo, or vice versa.
To get around, many islanders cycle. There are no roads or cars, as is the case on many islands around Venice. Motorcycles, mopeds and the like are also prohibited. Many visitors to Mazzorbo Island come for the silence and calm that the island offers.
Take the opportunity to visit the island of Mazzorbetto
The neighboring island of Mazzorbetto is even less populated and much larger. The island is only about 50 meters from Mazzorbetto. However, there is no bridge or public transport to get you there. As a result, the island is inaccessible to most tourists. You can see the island of Mazzorbetto from Mazzorbo and by waterbus. Only 10 inhabitants live on Mazzorbetto. If you want to get there, you'll have to hire a private boat, which discourages most tourists.
Mazzorbo is an exceptional place to visit. Just a stone's throw from Burano, it's a quiet retreat you can make after seeing the main island's lace factories. What you need the perfect complement to your stay in Venice.
