Venice Lido: article summary
Venice Lido: the seaside resort at the gates of the Serenissima
Venice's Lido is a small island of 12 kilometers long for 4 km2 surface, which lies between the Venice lagoon and the Adriatic Sea.
A popular holiday destination by the venetiansIt's one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world, with its beaches and tranquil atmosphere that people come to enjoy every chance they get! I'd like to tell you more about it!
A brief history of Venice Lido
In Roman times, activity on the Venice lido (but also other) was concentrated in the village of Malamocco which served as a port for the nearby town of Padua (Patavium). The rest of the island was uninhabited and wild.
It was a point of defense for Venice against invaders as early as the 12th century, with various forts and barracks, traces of which can still be seen today.
It wasn't until the 17th century that the town began to develop, notably with the construction of the Murazziand stone walls to protect the coastline from erosion. In the 18th century, the Venetian lido had a pastoral appearance that seduces artists in search of calm and inspiration, and a tranquility that contrasts with the hustle and bustle of neighboring Serenissima.
Little by little, it attracts other travelers, and is transformed in a seaside resort for members of the European aristocracy and bourgeoisie, before becoming a favorite haunt of the Italian jet-set.
Hotels sprang up, more and more facilities were built, and only a devastating tide in 1966 slowed the development of the lido. Once reconstruction was complete, the area would take on its current formand became the region's favourite seaside resort.
The Venice Film Festival
Every year, Venice Mostra is held for the most part on Venice's Lido. It's one of the most important film festivals in the world! And the winning film receives the famous Lion d'Or.
Among the most famous award-winning works (in my opinion!) are :
- The Great War by Mario Monicelli (1959)
- Sandra by Luchino Visconti (1969)
- Hana-bi by Takeshi Kitano (1997)
- The Secret of Brokeback Mountain by Ang Lee (2005)
