To make things easier for you during your stay in Venice, I suggest this interactive map (more details on this article also)
Here you will find major points of interest of the city, you'll be able to move easily from neighborhood to neighborhood and plan your itinerary as you see fit.
As you can see on this map of Venice, there are a high concentration of attractions near the Place Saint Marc and the surrounding area. But that's not to say that the other neighborhoods lack appeal.
I've listed the must-sees for each district in detail below.
Venice's major points of interest and their locations
Venice is divided into 6 neighborhoods - called Sestiere - and each of them has its own points of interest. Here they are, with the corresponding map.
The San Marco district and its monuments
This is Venice's must-see district and the one where you'll find the most emblematic monuments of the city. Among them are :
- Visit Piazza San Marcothe city's best-known landmark
- Visit St Mark's BasilicaVenice's most important religious building
- Visit Doge's Palacea place of major importance in the city's history, and a gateway to the Bridge of Sighs
- The Opera La Fenice of Venice, aptly named!
- Visit royal gardensa quiet green setting in the heart of the city
- Visit Correr Museumthe town's municipal museum, where you can discover the history of the town.
San polo, a magnificent central district
Right in the center of Venice, you'll find the San Polo district, a pleasant place to stroll. There are many narrow streets and the constant hustle and bustle allows you to enjoy the city's very special atmosphere.
Here you can see :
- Visit Rialto Bridgeone of the world's most famous bridges
- Visit Rialto markets on the banks of the bridge, which are held every morning
- Visit Casa de Carlo Goldonia typical Venetian house where one of the greatest Venetian playwrights lived
- Many churches, such as the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari or even San Pantalon Church with its superb painted ceiling
Castello, east of Venice
The Castello district is located in the east of Venice and is the city's largest. However, it's not the one with the most monuments to visit, as it was a military/naval site for a long time.
You can see :
- The Venice Arsenalan area dedicated to shipbuilding and city protection
- Visit Venice Museum of Naval History
- The church of San Zaccaria and its famous flooded cryptone of the the unusual in Venice
- Visit Riva degli Schiavonia pleasant walk along the seafront
Dorsoduro, Venice's southern district
In the southern part of Venice's historic center, you'll find the Dorsoduro district, linked to San Marco by the admirable Accademia Bridge.
Among the most interesting places to visit are :
- Visit Peggy Guggenheim collectionwith works by major contemporary artists
- Visit Gallerie dell'Accademia of Venice, which houses the largest collection of Venetian paintings from the XIVᵉ to the XVIIIᵉ centuries.
- Visit Basilica of Santa Maria della Salutewith its imposing Dome and waterfront façade
- Visit Leonardo da Vinci Museumwhich showcases many of the Italian genius' inventions
Santa Croce, gateway to the city
Santa Croce is the district Venice's westernmost and it's not the most interesting. There's a simple reason for this: it's mainly used as an arrival point for visitors! Here you'll find :
- Visit Piazzale Romaa bus station with bus and vaporetto and Venice parking lot
- Visit Santa Lucia station for those arriving by train
- Some small churches, such as San Giacomo dell'Orio
Cannaregio, a quiet area full of charm
The Cannareggio district is quite astonishing, and you can discover it in the northwest of Venice. Less crowded than the sestieri the most centrally located, it's not lacking in appeal.
You'll find :
- Visit Venice's Jewish quarterwith its Hebrew museum and synagogues
- Several renowned palaces, which shine as much for their façades as for their lavishly decorated interiors
- Visit Venice Casinolocated in an impressive building
- One of the world's most original supermarkets, located in the heart of a former theater!
