What to see and do in Venice, district by district?
Venice's historic center is on a human scale and is made up of 6 neighborhoodscalled Sestieri : San Marco, San Polo, Dorsoduro, Castello, Cannareggio and Santa Croce.
Here's a chance to discover the must-see sights in each of them, along with a map of Venice by neighborhood!
San Marco, Venice's No. 1 district
Central district of the city, San Marco brings together most of the city's most emblematic landmarks. This is where you'll find :
- Visit Piazza San Marco
- Visit Doge's Palace
- Visit San Marco Basilica
- Visit Venice Campanile
- The procuraties
- The Correr Museum
- Visit Bridge of Sighs
- The Royal Gardens
- The theater of la Fenice
So make sure you stop off at the emblematic Harry's Bar or to Café Florianone of the oldest establishments of its kind in Europe!
Dorsoduro, the art district
The sestiere of Dorsoduro is located south of San Marco, as you can see on the map of Venice. All you need to do is crossing the academy bridge to discover some of the places most appreciated by art lovers, such as :
- The Gallerie dell'Accademia
- Visit Peggy Guggenheim collection
- Leonardo da Vinci Museum
- The Academy of Fine Arts
We also come across beautiful churches including the superb Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, which borders the the Venice lagoon.
San Polo and its emblematic buildings
The San Polo is located to the west of San Marco, and it is here that you can admire the superb Rialto bridge. In this area, I also recommend :
- The Rialto market near the bridge
- Visit Venice Grand Canal that crosses the neighborhood
- Carlo Goldoni's house
San Polo is a central zone which you're sure to pass through, and I invite you to lose yourself in its narrow streets to admire the canals that wind through the district.
Castello, the widest sestiere
The sestiere of Castello is the largest, yet not the busiest. Its military function, with guard posts and a naval factory, sets it apart from the rest, but it's a pleasure to explore.

Cannaregio and its peaceful atmosphere
Cannaregio is a district I particularly appreciate in Venice, for its calm and peaceful atmosphere. It's located to the northwest, and is home to several points of interest.

Santa Croce, arrival point in Venice
Most visitors will arrive via the Santa Crocewhere the Venice parking lotsVenice bus station (the Piazzale Roma) and Santa Lucia station.
There's not much to see or do in this area, but it's a must!

If Venice's historic center is not lacking in things to discover, it would be a shame to miss out. the beautiful neighbouring islands and the towns around Venice.
